Honda Insight IMA System
The Honda Integrated Motor Assist system is a gasoline-electric drivetrain
that uses a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder, SOHC, VTEC™-E gasoline engine, operating
parallel to an ultra-compact electric motor. This combination gives the Insight
its remarkable fuel efficiency and the performance of a larger-engined
automobile. The electric motor is located between the engine and transmission.
Special features of the IMA system include:
- All-new, compact VTEC-E valve train
- Integrated cylinder head and exhaust manifold saves weight and space, and
promotes faster catalyst activation and lower hydrocarbon emission
- Use of lightweight components, including a magnesium oil pan, and special
plastics for the intake manifold, water-pump pulley and valve cover
- High-strength, lightweight, forged-steel connecting rods, shot-peened
forged-aluminum pistons, and forged-steel crankshaft enhance engine
durability
- Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection system
- Direct ignition
- Iridium-tipped spark plugs
- Integral permanent magnet electric drive motor also functions as a
generator and starter motor
- All-new, compact 5-speed manual transmission
